“You should never let your fears prevent you from doing what you know is right.”
― Aung San Suu Kyi
One of the most poignant moments I’ve ever captured in a fight photo is the stoppage of a fight of someone who truly doesn’t want their opportunity taken away in this way. This fighter pleaded with the referee for a few moments before accepting the reality of the fight’s end. The ref eventually, more tenderly, held the fighter’s head in his hands and further explained that the fight had to end. The fighter, with his illusions shattered, was nurtured into the reality of the fight’s end by the ref. There’s something deeply human about a moment like this.
I have no idea what this fighter’s background is, whether or not he trained hard, or how badly he actually wanted to win; nevertheless, my imagination gives him all the credit in the world for stepping into that ring and I’m affected by and empathize with weakness realized and the desperation to continue.
“I’ve already wasted my whole life. I want to tell you with my last breath that I have always loved you. I would rather be a ghost, drifting by your side as a condemned soul, than enter heaven without you. Because of your love, I will never be a lonely spirit.”
